Social-Emotional Learning
Building empathy, resilience, and emotional confidence through play, connection, and care
At Heartworks, social‑emotional learning is at the heart of everything we do.
We believe that when children feel safe, supported, and understood, they are free to explore, learn, and grow. Through daily play‑based experiences, we help children build empathy, resilience, self‑awareness, and meaningful relationships—skills that support them not only in school, but throughout life.
Supporting emotional safety & self-regulation
Learning to understand and manage emotions takes time, guidance, and practice. Our educators support children as they develop self‑regulation—the ability to recognize feelings, express them safely, and respond in healthy ways.
Big emotions can feel overwhelming, especially for young children. When children feel emotionally safe, they are better able to explore, take risks, and engage in learning. Our classrooms are designed to offer comfort, consistency, and trusted relationships so children always know they are supported.
Educators are present to guide children through emotional moments—helping them name feelings, try calming strategies, and build confidence in navigating challenges.
Seed & Sew (S.E.E.D.)
Heartworks schools are proud to be S.E.E.D. certified (Schools Excelling in Emotional Development). Through Seed & Sew, we focus on nurturing emotional intelligence, empathy, connection, and resilience in early childhood.
This approach empowers both educators and families to create environments where children—and the adults who support them—can thrive. Social‑emotional learning is woven into daily routines, classroom conversations, and play‑based interactions, helping children practice these skills in real, meaningful ways.
Choose Love™ Enrichment Program
As part of our commitment to social‑emotional learning, Heartworks uses the Choose Love™ Enrichment Program, which teaches children essential skills that support emotional well‑being and positive relationships.
Children are introduced to the Choose Love Formula:
Courage + Gratitude + Forgiveness + Compassion in Action = Choosing Love
Through stories, discussions, and everyday classroom moments, children learn how to:
- Build courage and confidence
- Practice gratitude and appreciation
- Understand forgiveness
- Show compassion through their actions
Families are included in this journey, with ongoing communication about what children are learning and how these skills can be reinforced at home.
Story by Heart
Story by Heart is a cherished daily tradition that has been part of Heartworks since the very beginning. Taking place at the end of each day, it offers a calm, reflective close that helps children transition peacefully to pickup.
During Story by Heart, educators gather with children to share an impromptu, imaginative story told from the heart—no books, no scripts. These stories may reflect moments from the day, explore character themes, or simply spark joy and laughter.
Families are always welcome to join their children during Story by Heart, sitting together to experience this cozy, meaningful moment. It’s a beautiful example of how we slow down, connect, and nurture emotional well‑being as a community.
Why social-emotional learning matters
Children who develop strong social‑emotional skills are:
- Better prepared for school and life
- More confident in managing emotions and building friendships
- Stronger problem‑solvers and decision‑makers
- More resilient when facing challenges
When children feel safe, loved, and understood, they are more confident, engaged, and ready to learn. At Heartworks, social‑emotional learning is not a separate lesson—it’s part of how we care for children every day.
