About Heartworks Early Education
Trusted by families for generations, designed for how children learn today
A "Work of the Heart" since 1987
Heartworks Early Education was founded in 1987 by Diane and Louise Piché as a small, home-based preschool in Shelburne, Vermont. What began as a deeply personal vision quickly grew into something meaningful for families across the state. Today, Heartworks is a beloved early education brand in Vermont—one that generations of families know and trust.
In 2015, a new chapter began when Lisa and Paul acquired Heartworks and expanded its philosophy to include Loveworks and Steamworks, along with Renaissance Elementary and Endeavour Middle Schools. While those K–8 schools closed in 2018, they played an important role in shaping the innovation and growth of the Heartworks approach.
That same year, Heartworks joined Babilou Family US family, and thoughtfully consolidated into what is now Heartworks Early Education—blending the very best of Heartworks, Loveworks, and Steamworks into one cohesive program.
Today, Heartworks operates six schools throughout Vermont and is bringing its proven, heart-centered approach to new communities beyond the state. In 2024, we began an exciting new chapter with the launch of our first Heartworks school in Massachusetts, welcoming new families to experience our philosophy firsthand.
Who we are
For more than 30 years, Heartworks has provided nurturing, thoughtful learning environments—both indoors and outdoors—designed to spark curiosity and foster a lifelong love of learning. We believe early education is truly a “work of the heart.”
Our schools are built around supporting the whole child: socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically. Every experience is intentional, developmentally appropriate, and rooted in respect for each child as a capable, curious learner.
Heartworks proudly represents the U.S. network of Babilou Family, a global, mission-driven early education organization committed to supporting children’s emotional and cognitive development during the most important early years of life. As part of this international community of educators and thought leaders, we draw inspiration from global standards while remaining deeply responsive to the needs of each local community we serve.
Our guiding principles
Values
Mindfulness, kindness, respect, and good manners are at the heart of our community. We believe children learn best in environments where they feel safe, seen, and valued.
Learning through nature
Connecting with the natural world is an essential part of the Heartworks experience. Through outdoor play, science exploration, and movement, children build physical skills, confidence, and a deeper respect for the world around them.
Developmentally purposeful learning
Our educators design activities with clear curricular and developmental goals, helping children build the skills they need for their next educational milestones—while still keeping learning joyful and engaging.
Thoughtful, hands-on curriculum
Heartworks blends essential knowledge with new ideas and discoveries. Lessons are interactive and hands-on, encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, and a genuine love of learning.
Grounded in science
Our educational approach is rooted in research on early childhood development and continues to evolve as new scientific insights emerge. As part of Babilou Family’s commitment to Sustainable Education, we focus on building both knowledge and essential life skills that support long-term success.
Building the foundation for lifelong learning
We believe education begins at birth. Our programs support children from infancy through Preschool and Pre-K, focusing on the foundational social-emotional and cognitive skills that allow learning to flourish. Our educators meet each child where they are—guiding them with care, intention, and expertise.
