How We Learn and Play
An intentional approach to early education built on play, observation, and exploration.
At Heartworks, learning begins with curiosity and unfolds through play, movement, and meaningful relationships.
We believe children learn best when they feel safe, respected, and free to explore at their own pace. Our approach blends child‑led learning, close observation, and enriching experiences that support the whole child—socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively.
Child-led Learning
Children are natural learners. Our role as educators is to observe, listen, and respond—guiding learning through children’s interests rather than following rigid lesson plans.
Our educators adapt teaching strategies in real time, based on how children are engaging and responding. By focusing on what truly interests each child, we support individual learning styles, strengths, and developmental readiness.
Following Each Child's Rhythm
Every child develops on their own timeline—and we honor that.
By respecting individual rhythms, children build self‑awareness and learn to listen to their bodies. They gain confidence in making choices that feel right for them, while also learning to respect the needs and pace of their peers.
We work closely with families to support children through milestones such as sleep, potty learning, and daily routines. Together, we follow each child’s needs—never rushing progress, and never pushing before they’re ready.
Close Observation & Personalized Learning
Our educators carefully observe each child to create learning experiences that match their unique interests, abilities, and developmental stage.
Milestones are not rushed. Routines may be slowed down or advanced depending on what a child needs in the moment. This thoughtful observation empowers children to be active participants in their own learning—building confidence, independence, and a strong sense of self.
Music & Movement
We support learning through rhythm, sound, and physical expression. Our Music & Movement program blends music‑therapy‑informed practices with educational experiences. Children sing, move, use sign language, and explore instruments—strengthening language development, coordination, emotional expression, and problem‑solving skills, all while having fun.
STEAM-Inspired Learning
In addition to our core child‑led philosophy, we offer a dynamic afternoon STEAM curriculum in our Preschool and Pre-K classrooms designed to extend learning through curiosity, creativity, and hands‑on exploration.
STEAM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math—invites children to investigate how the world works through playful, project‑based experiences. This enrichment program supports problem‑solving, collaboration, and innovative thinking in developmentally appropriate ways.
Each afternoon focuses on one area of STEAM:
- Monday - Science: Hands‑on experiments and nature‑based exploration
- Tuesday - Technology: Simple tools, cause‑and‑effect play, and early coding concepts
- Wednesday - Engineering: Designing and building with a variety of materials
- Thursday - Art: Creative expression through open‑ended projects
- Friday - Math: Counting, sorting, patterning, measuring, and playful problem‑solving
Monthly rotating themes provide structure while leaving plenty of room for child‑led discovery. The goal is to nurture confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning—through experiences that feel like play.
